Megaupload Respawns As Mega On One Year Anniversary

Kim Dotcom will launch another file-hosting business exactly one year after his original site, Megaupload, was shut down by authorities. This new venture promises to be ‘Mega’.

At its peak, Megaupload was one of the largest sites on the Internet, receiving 50 million hits a day.

But in January of this year, the site was taken down by the US government for hosting pirated content. Several employees, including the site’s infamous founder, Kim Dotcom, were arrested.

Dotcom will celebrate his incarceration in the most unusual way. Even though the criminal proceedings against Megaupload are ongoing, Dotcom and his team plan on reincarnating Megaupload. The service will be simply known as ‘Mega’ and will be launched a full year after Megaupload’s demise on the 19th of January, 2013.

“The new Mega will launch exactly 1 year after the raid,” Dotcom announced over Twitter. He also added the new site will have a Doomsday launch button in place; an aid TorrentFreak describes as a ‘self-destruct’ button.

In September, Dotcom claimed coding for Mega was nearly finished, servers had been ordered and that investors were lining up to join the “massive global network.”

Mega won’t be reserved for file sharing alone. Dotcom is reaching out to developers of email, fax tools, VOIP and video apps, who can have access to Mega’s APIs.

Furthermore, Torrentfreak report uploads will be more secure compliments of an AES algorithm encryption. A unique encryption key will be given to users, who can then choose who can use their files.

Dotcom’s new baby has yet to be named; however, he has registered a few domain names befitting of the new service. Either way, Dotcom remains one of the most interesting internet moguls, living large and defiantly.
