LG To Dump Google For New Smart TV Platform

LG Electronics, who is believed to be not happy with Google TV’s terms and conditions, is set to reveal a brand new Smart TV platform built on the HP WebOS open source software.SmartHouse understands that LG wants to deliver advertising to their own customers via their smart TV’s, but the conditions of the Google TV licence prevent them from doing this.

Instead the Korean Company, who is already delivering advertising through LG Smart TVs sold in Australia, has signed an agreement with Hewlett Packard to use their WebOS to develop a brand new Smart TV platform that will be shown at the 2013 CES Show in January.

SmartHouse has confirmed that a development team made up primarily of HP employees is working on the new platform which allows advertising to be delivered to the TV by LG.

Samsung is also developing their own advertising platform in an effort to take on Google in the delivery of advertising to Samsung devices, spanning TVs, smartphones, tablets and PCs.

The new WebOS developed software will replace the current NetCast Smart TV system currently used by LG.

The next generation of LG TVs will also incorporate a new motherboard that will house a quad core and dual core processor similar to what LG is using in their new range of Smartphones.

A source told SmartHouse that the combination of new software and processing power will allow users to open a browser, search the web and download content from a variety of sources including Google Movies.

The software will also be HTML 5 friendly with the new team set to re write the interface to several popular applications that will run on the new LG Smart TV.
