Optus has chosen Huawei as its vendor partner for rollout of 4G LTE (Long-Term Evolution) mobile network in Newcastle and surrounding areas, it was confirmed yesterday

Optus 1800MHz spectrum is  built on the Chinese telco’s SingleRAN (Radio Access Network) innovation – capableof delivering 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE from a single base station.

Optus 4G Service is due to go live next month, makinig it the second telco after Telstra to go to Long Term Evolution technology on the same 1800Mhz frequency.

“This is a real milestone for Huawei Australia, marking the delivery of our first 4G LTEnetwork in Australia,” said Huawei CTO, Peter Rossi.

“Huawei and Optus have seen good results during our recent LTE trials, and we’re looking forward to delivering next-generation mobile services to customers in Newcastle.”

Huawei will be the full turnkey vendor for the project, responsible for installation, commissioning, spectrum refarming, transmission and  managed services.

Huawei began the project in late 2011, with services due to come online in April this year to Newcastle and further soon after.

Huawei was also Optus vendor partner for Optus regional 3G network expansion and has over 60 commercial LTE contracts with telco’s worldwide.
