LG & Samsung Slug It Out With CES Leaks Ahead Of Big Tech Show

Korean tech giants Samsung and LG are both trying to outdo each other ahead of the 2014 CES show with both Companies leaking information about what they will show at the January event.

Samsung has announced that they will show a
smart TV application, which enables users to watch photos of National
Geographic, a global documentary magazine, on UHD (Ultra High Definition) TV.
This application, the first TV app for the magazine, will allow people to enjoy
50 photographs selected in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the
magazine’s publication on UHD TV. Samsung is to launch this app in January next
year.

It’s also tipped that Samsung will show a
prototype of flexible TV whose screen can be easily adjusted from a flat one to
a curved one. In fact, the company registered a patent on flexible TV whose
curvature can be adjusted by remote control, in May in the United States.

LG Electronics sent out a press release
revealing that they will show a premium IPS (In-Plane Switching) on a 34-inch
“Cineview” Monitor adopting the IPS panel. The Cineview monitor is suitable to
watching videos such as films and online lectures because it takes on the
aspect ratio of 21:9, same to that of the theatre screen.

Samsung has also begun a global rollout of
a Smartphone Game Pad, which is a gaming controller that controls games running
on a Bluetooth-connected Android smartphone or tablet. The device works with
smartphones and tablets running Android 4.1 and up but is optimized for Samsung
devices running Android 4.3 and up.

The GamePad is available in select markets
but not Australia at this stage.

For home use, the on-screen action can be
transferred to a big-screen TV by connecting a tablet or smartphone to a TV via
HDMI cable or via wireless, Samsung noted. For on-the-go use, consumers can
attach the Game Pad to mobile devices with screen sizes of 4-inches to
6.3-inches.

The controller, equipped with near field
communications (NFC) for tap-to-connect functionality, is designed for use with
Samsung’s Mobile Console app, which lets users browse and purchase Game Pad
-supported games in Samsung’s app store. The number of supported games is 35
with more to come in 2014, the company said.

Supported games include  traditional racing titles such as EA’s Need
for Speed Most Wanted and Gameloft’s Asphalt8: Airborne, first-person shooter
games such as Gameloft’s Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour, sports titles such as SEGA’s
Virtua Tennis Challenge, and action titles such as Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia:
The Shadow and the Flame.
