No More Long Lines For New Apple Releases?

The days of lining up for the latest Apple release could be drawing to an end, with a leaked memo indicating the tech giant is set to focus more on online sales going forward.Long cues camped outside Apple stores have become part of the theatre of new Apple releases, however the memo sent by Apple retail chief Angela Ahrendts to retail staff, obtained by Business Insider, instead promotes a focus on online sales.

The memo instructs staff to encourage consumers to purchase online ahead of the upcoming release of the Apple Watch.

“The days of waiting in line and crossing fingers for a product are over for our customers,”  Business Insider reports the memo as stating. “The Apple Store app and our online store make it much easier to purchase Apple Watch and the new MacBook.

“Customers will know exactly when and where their product arrives. This is a significant change in mindset, and we need your help to make it happen. Tell your customers we have more availability online, and show them how easy it is to order. You’ll make their day.”

Business Insider notes that for the Apple Watch launch in the UK, the only way to purchase will be online and to have it delivered to home.

All of which indicates the long-anticipated launch of the Apple Watch will be different from recent product launches.

The Apple Watch – which will be available in two sizes, 38 mm and 42 mm, and three versions, the Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch, and Apple Watch Edition – will go on sale in nine countries, including Australia, from April 24.

In Australia, pre-orders will commence from April 10, with pricing starting at $499 for the Apple Watch Sport.

The International Data Corporation has forecast the wearables market will post steep growth in 2015, with the Apple Watch set to play a major role in driving the market forward.
