Nokia Gets Into VR Game With OZO Camera

Nokia is entering the virtual reality market, taking the wraps off OZO, which it states is the first commercially available virtual reality camera to have been designed and built for professional content creators. In unveiling the product, Nokia has joined the likes of Samsung, Facebook-owned Oculus, Sony, Microsoft and HTC in developing VR tech, with the market gathering increasing momentum as companies bring a range of new products to consumers.

Nokia states OZO captures stereoscopic 3D video through eight synchronised global shutter sensors and spatial audio through eight integrated microphones. Software built for OZO enables real-time 3D viewing, with a playback feature removing the need to preassemble a panoramic image.

Filmed content can be published for commercially available VR viewing hardware, including head-mounted displays, with OZO also integrating into existing professional workflows and working with third-party tools.

“OZO aims to advance the next wave of innovation in VR by putting powerful tools in the hands of professionals who will create amazing experiences for people around the world,” Ramzi Haidamus, Nokia Technologies president, commented.

“We expect that virtual reality experiences will soon radically enhance the way people communicate and connect to stories, entertainment, world events and each other. With OZO, we plan to be at the heart of this new world.”

Nokia has stated that pricing and full technical specifications will be announced at a future date, with shipments anticipated in the 2015 fourth quarter.
