Telstra Kills Off Mog; Few Weep Over Telco’s Dead Cat

As widely expected, Telstra has turned off its little-used music streaming service Mog. Future of the service has been in doubt since the US division of the brand changed hands a number of times and shut its doors in the US last year.

Telstra said last year that it would try to keep the service going, but on Friday announced that it had set a date to switch it off for good.

“From August 31, the Mog service will no longer operate in Australia,” the No. 1 telco said.

“This means existing subscribers to Mog will still have access to the service up to and including August 31.”

The moggy mobile app will become a software dead cat, with Telstra’s FAQ recommending users to simply delete it from their device. Telstra has not said if it will reimburse Australian users for the loss of their music collections or if it will offer them access to a new service.

It’s unclear how many customers have been making use of the service in Australia, but it’s thought to be slight compared with Spotify, Pandora or Apple Music.
