The Turnbull Government is developing an online reporting tool which will enable victims to report cases of what it calls “non-consensual sharing of intimate images” – better known “revenge porn”, Communications Minister Mitch Fifield has revealed.
Development of the tool will cost an estimated $4.8 million. It is expected to become available next year and will be managed by the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner, which has already established an online portal to assist victims of cyberbullying.
“Unfortunately, non-consensual sharing of intimate images has become increasingly common, due to the proliferation of smartphones and social media. Victims are typically young people,” said Fifield.
He added that the announcement forms part of a suite of measures in the Government’s National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children, which is backed by $100 million in Australian Government funding.
