Online Pirated CD Sales Jump

Major record companies have reported that in European markets direct-to-consumer CD sales have been flat and Amazon account sales are down 17 percent, mainly due to counterfeits.

While there are still plenty of people buying compact discs, the money spent on CDs hasn’t necessarily gone to the artists and record labels that created the music.

Pirates continue to flood Amazon.com and other online retailers with counterfeit CDs that often cost nearly as much as the official versions and are difficult to detect.

Although CD sales accounted for only about 13 percent of revenue for record labels in the US in the first half of 2016, they accounted for nearly 40 percent of global revenue for the $15 billion recorded music industry last year.
