A Closer Look At Panasonic’s150-inch Plasma

Gizmodo USA has managed to steal a look at the Panasonic 150-inch plasma TV prototype. Probably costing the GDP of a small African nation, the mammoth unit uses more energy than a washer or dryer, which is saying something, because dryers especially suck more energy than almost any other appliance in the house.

Adam Frucci reckons “if you’ve got the proper ultra-HD footage pumping into it, it makes 1080p look like a second-rate resolution, but even with 1080p, it’s absolutely stunning.”

Playing video games can be slightly intimidating, especially when you have life-sized enemies shooting at you and the noise to back it up.

What makes the unit different is that it feels like you are in the TV, especially when you stand close to it, and even makes Panaonic’s 103-inch unit look small.

One problem will be when watching 1080p the unit is found wanting – not that surprising if you think about it since a 4K TV does to 1080p what your new HDTV does to standard-def. That being said, it is designed to run with precision-mastered footage.

Panasonic will begin selling the 150-inch plasma next year, and will probably cost about twice as much as the $65,000 103-inch unit.
