ABC News Embarrassed By Privacy Commissioner

The accuracy of ABC News has again been questioned after they claimed that climate change scientists at the Australian National University had received death threats.

However an investigation by Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim, ruled that the messages contained abuse but no death threats.

The ABC who has a policy of protecting their own has dismissed those who questioned its accuracy as “sceptics.”

The Australian newspaper said the ABC issued a statement in the form of a news “update” after flaws emerged in its reports.

The flaws came to light after 11 emails held by ANU that purportedly contained death threats were examined by Timothy Pilgrim.

That ruling, part of a successful Freedom of Information campaign by climate change blogger and lawyer Simon Turnill, is available on the website of the Australian Information Commissioner.

Mr Turnill told the Australian that the ABC’s update was inadequate and he endorsed the call for a clarification.

“For the ABC to suggest this is a conspiracy by ‘sceptics’ is laughable,” he said. “All I am seeking to do is ensure these matters are reported accurately.”
