Incorrectly labelled trolley jacks have been withdrawn from sale after Australian Competition and Consumer Commission intervention. The move comes after it was revealed that 29 people alone have died in Victoria from the failure of trolly jacks.
“The ACCC has accepted court enforceable undertakings from R King Enterprises Pty Ltd, trading as Mocare (SA), after it supplied hydraulic trolley jacks that failed to comply with a mandatory product safety standard,” ACCC deputy chairman, Peter Kell, said today.
“The trolley jack standard requires important safety information to be fixed to jacks. This includes a warning that consumers should not get under a vehicle that is only supported by a trolley jack and to use vehicle support stands.
“From late 2008 Mocare supplied Tool King trolley jacks in models TJ-1350, TJ-1550 and TJ-1850 which did not include this important warning. Further, the jacks labelling stated that the products complied with the standard, when they don’t.”
After the ACCC notified Mocare that these models of Tool King trolley jacks did not comply with the standard the company cooperated and immediately stopped supplying them. There have been no reports of injuries related to the use of these Tool King trolley jacks. The company has given undertakings to the ACCC that it will:
not supply any products in the future that do not fully comply with the relevant mandatory consumer product safety standards
undertake a recall of the non-compliant Tool King trolley jacks, and implement a trade practices law compliance program.
“Every year there are deaths and serious injuries resulting from use of vehicle and trolley jacks in Australia,” he said. “Unfortunately, only recently a man in South Australia was killed and a man in Victoria was reported to have suffered head injuries in incidents with jacks.
“Between 2000-2007, 29 Australians died and, in Victoria alone, 320 people went to hospital emergency departments with injuries related to vehicle jacks. The labelling requirements of the mandatory standards reduce the risk of such incidents occurring.
“It is imperative that business operators ensure that vehicle and trolley jacks they supply comply with the standards.
“Consumers must heed the warnings and never get under a vehicle supported only by a trolley jack.”
