Acer boasts its new Aspire range of notebooks is the first in the world to offer Dolby Home Theater or Dolby Digital Live for virtual surround sound.
According to Acer’s Stuart Buxton, the speakers on the notebooks, while still designed by Acer, have been modified also – now being 40 percent larger to deliver more powerful sound. By plugging in external speakers, the notebooks are capable of outputting 5.1 sound, and surround sound is possible via headphones also.
With an emphasis on simplicity of use, the notebooks feature one-touch media keys to play / stop DVDs and so forth, without having to scroll through menus. The overall design of the notebooks, dubbed the “Gemstone signature” by Acer, is rounded and curved, with a black frame and ceramic-like interior surface – like a “finely cut opal,” Acer says.
Also launched today was the new TravelMate commercial notebook line designed with a more “serious” look and feel in colour scheme and shape. The new line has an emphasis on security with Acer’s proprietary BioProtect technology for fingerprint recognition access.
According to Buxton, Acer will be offering a notebook in both ranges, in each price range starting from about $1000. “It’s a question of whether you want to make products for all or for niche, we’ve decided to go down the ‘for all’ route and we’ve been quite successful at it, with 48 percent year on year growth in PCs,” he said.
