Acer To Launch Windows & Google Touch Phones

Acer Australia who hopes to take on the HTC Google Android phone and new Windows phones from Samsung may have problems securing a telecommunications carrier claims a senior executive at Telstra.

The Company who is more associated with PC’s and notebooks than phones plans on launching new Windows Mobile phones running “touch and multi touch” as well as a Google Android offering late in Q3 and into Q4.

A senior Telstra executive said “Several vendors want to get into the phone market and of late we have had approaches from several IT vendors who want carriers to start selling their versions of a Smartphone. At the same time we are being offered new models from existing communication Companies like HTC, Nokia, LG and Samsung” they said.

“Some IT vendors believe that because phones have worked for Apple it will work for them however this is not the case as many IT Companies have limited phone support and their brand is more associated with notebooks and netbooks than phones” they added.

Currently Acer Australia is recruiting personnel with the Australian mobile phone operation currently being run out of Singapore by Rodger Yuen who has already made several trips to Australia this year in an effort to negotiate distribution.

Bert Noah the General Manager of Acer’s IT Division said “With carriers it will be a case of features and how much margin is in the phone. The Smartphone market is predominantly professional people who are already buying Acer branded notebooks and netbooks so they are well aware of the brand. We believe that we will be competitive in the phone market in Australia”.

Globally Acer has said that they aim to ship 2-2.5 million Acer branded smartphones in 2010 and expects annual shipments to increase to 20 million units in 2012-2014. These say analysts will take smack up against brands like Samsung LG and HTC.

According to Aymar de Lencquesaing, the president of Acer’s Smart Handheld Business Group Acer is hoping to capture between 6-7% market share, of the global Smartphone market.

In an interview with DigiTimes he said “There is still room for the further development in the smartphone segment given that only 300 million out of the world’s four billion handset users are smartphone subscribers, Lencquesaing stated.

Acer forecasts global demand for smartphones will grow 15% annually over the next five years, Lencquesaing added.

Acer’s branded notebook and netbook product image and its partnerships with telecom carriers to promote netbooks can be recruited for pushing its smartphones, Lencquesaing said.
