Amazon snares exclusive rights to Angry Birds, pulling the rug from under rival Google.
The lucrative deal with Rovio, the makers of the hit game, will give Amazon App store exclusive selling rights for the much hyped Angry Birds Rio app due for release on Android.
The App store will also offer other ad-free versions of Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons, all of which are paid apps.
The deal, has also put the focus on Android rival Google, with criticism being fired at the search giant for its focus on free rather than paid apps.
According to Forbes magazine, issues have also been raised about Android creators, Google’s, ability to prevent piracy of its games apps.
“The Android platform has seen phenomenal growth, and it’s great that new avenues for app distribution are opening up,” according to Rovio CEO, Mikael Hed.
“The openness of the Android platform works for the benefit of consumers and developers alike.
Its been a busy few weeks for Rovio. Last week they received $42m investment boost and plans to build a whole franchise and spin offs from the gaming phenomenon.
The deal was announced at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Conferences going on in Texas which showcases film and music content as well as and new emerging technologies.
