Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Starts Rolling Out

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is rolling out to smartphones, with Galaxy Nexus owners first in line.

Within the coming week, Nexus owners will see software notifications prompting them to download the over-the-air update. In a Google+ posting, Google announced the Nexus S and the Motorola Xoom will be next in line to receive the update.

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet will come with Jelly Bean preinstalled.

Google claims “Jelly Bean makes everything feel fast, fluid and smooth,” and they’re not kidding. To measure how fluid the the software is, they put Jelly Bean alongside Ice Scream Sandwich and used a camera to capture transitions at 300 frames per second. The results are remarkable.

Not only is Jelly Bean’s software more fluid, it’s better versed at managing actions within the notification bar, as opposed to being directed to the relevant application.

Additional features include a redesigned search experience imbued with superior voice search. In fact, recent third party tests indicate Google’s Voice Search is superior to Apple’s Siri.

The final draw is Google Now, a new and intuitive way to deliver information based on your likes and habits. When you wake up, you’ll automatically be served the daily weather forecast, traffic levels or “you’re favourite teams score as they’re playing.”

Other devices, such as HTC’s One X and Samsung’s Galaxy S3, won’t receive the update until later on this year as their version of Android is heavily customised and must endure additional testing.

Either way, Jelly Bean is well worth the wait, giving the incredibly functional OS an energetic scoop of sugar.
