Apple Fuels Rumor Mill With Wireless Power Consortium Membership

Apple has reignited earlier rumors that the company’s next iPhone will feature the long requested feature of wireless charging after the company’s name was discovered to be a newly-approved member of the Wireless Power Consortium.According to their website, the organization is “a group of leading
manufacturers in a wide range of industries that understand the untapped
potential of wireless charging. WPC members include leading makers of
mobile phones, consumer electronics, batteries, semiconductors,
components, wireless power technology and infrastructure such as
wireless operators, furniture and automotive parts.”

Other members include companies like LG, Samsung, Sony and HTC.

In a statement issued to Business Insider,
Apple said it “is joining the Wireless Power Consortium to be able to
participate and contribute ideas to the open, collaborative development
of future wireless charging standards. We look forward to working
together with the WPC and its members.”

Recent weeks have seen various rumors and speculation that the
company would be building on the wireless charging tech seen in its
Apple Watch for incorporation into its next flagship handset.

However, it looks like Apple will approach selling the new charger in much the same manner as they did last year’s AirPods.

Reports say the company will look to include a traditional charger
with their next phone and sell the wireless variant as an optional
accessory.
