Apple Puts $859 Price Tag On New iPhone 4

Apple Australia has put a recommended retail price of $859 on the new iPhone 4 which goes on sale in Australia from midnight Thursday.

A new iPhone 3GS 8GB model will also be available for outright purchase for $719, Apple Australia said.
The phones will be sold via Apple’s online store, its own retail Apple Stores, and authorised Apple resellers, including all three major carriers: Telstra, Optus and VHA. Apple will sell it unlocked, enabling it to be used with any carrier.
Optus is planning to open some stores at midnight to cater for early sales, but other carriers’ promotional plans were unknown last night. Apple stores will open at 8am Friday.
All carriers are expected to offer the new iPhones on zero-upfront monthly plans – with prime targets expected to be the many buyers who took up similar plans at the original 3G iPhone launch in July 2008 and are now coming to the end of their two-year contracts.
