Apple To Launch New Products On September 10

Apple will hold a special event on September 10 to announce the next version of the iPhone and more details about iOS 7, the next version of the iPhone and iPad operating system, according to the Wall Street Journal’s technology Web site, All Things Digital, quoting an unnamed source.

Apple has declined to comment on the report. But observers say the date would fall into Apple’s usual iPhone launch schedule: the company released the current iPhone 5 on September 12, 2012.

WSJ/All Things D reports are generally taken more seriously than those from the wilder rumour sites.

The next iPhone is expected to have a similar design to the iPhone 5, but may add a fingerprint reader for added security, a faster processor and an improved camera. It’s likely to be dubbed the iPhone 5S. A more radical iPhone 6, possibly with a bigger screen, is expected early in 2014.

Apple is also said to be working on a cheaper version of the iPhone, named the iPhone 5C. It would have a plastic casing rather than brushed metal and come in a range of colours – hence the “C” tag.

While Apple has not commented on the forthcoming iPhones, it has shown off the software that will run on them, as well as some older models. It previewed the forthcoming iOS 7 software in June: it features a radically different software design with a minimalist touch, overseen by Apple’s design chief Jonathan Ive.
