Apple Under Fire For Charging Aussies Too Much

Apple’s iPhone 4S needs to be better priced if the company is to “do the right thing” by its Australian customers, says the NSW Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts.

Australians were being “short shrift” with the price of Apple products, especially when considering the strength of the Aussie dollar says Ninemsn.

Citing the iPhone 4S as an early adopter, Roberts hoped Apple would consider more appropriate pricing across its range in an effort to avoid backlash from Australian consumers.

“Local consumers are savvy and I expect many previously loyal Apple fans would be considering the increasing number of quality alternatives when looking to buy smart phones, tablet computers and digital downloads,” Mr Roberts said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Lets hope the new iPhone comes with an up-to-date currency converter.”

Apple is restricting choice in digital media by not endorsing online retailing and the “free trade” it has cultivated in online books, CDs and DVDs.

“In order to register for an overseas-based site offering digital downloads, customers need an address and credit card issued in that country,” he said.

“These measures effectively restrict consumer options and enable companies such as Apple to charge Australians.”

Australians who were Dolly Parton fans were cited as an example, having to pay up to 50 per cent more on iTunes for her back catalogue when compared to Americans.

“With digital downloads, cost considerations such as transport and rent neither explain nor justify the price difference.”
