Archos Delivers Cheap Tablets, Android-Topping 250GB Dual-Core Versions Await

Archos has begun shipping its latest slew of Android tablets this month that promise fast processors and inflated storage, though the star models are still half a year away. The new generation of the Archos G9 tablets are unique entrants to the saturated Android tablet market thanks to the optional hard disk drives (HDD) to max out storage to 250GB.

Archos 80 G9

Archos originally announced the G9 in July as the first tablet to house a HDD instead of the typical flash memory of other portables, with select models housing a 2.5 inch Seagate Momentus Thin HDD with a 7mm profile designed for notebooks.

The new G9s come in a 10.1 inch and 8 inch model and should hit stores by October at prices below the $500 point. The 8 inch model is currently listed on the Archos US store at $299.99. Pricing was originally set at $279 for the Archos 80 and $349 for the Archos 101.

Archos 101 G9

Housing a 1.5GHz processor would put the Archos tablets around the top of the Android tablet pile, but Archos has slowed the roll out to begin with 1GHz models this month with the 1.5GHz model delayed until January 2012.

The launch road map sees two 1GHz version of the 8 inch model, the Archos 80, with either 8GB or 16GB capacities shipping this September. It’s not until November that the 250GB HDD versions appear with a processor boost to 1.2GHz, and a further boost to 1.5GHz by January.

The 10 inch Archos 101 will see a similar launch schedule, with the same capacities progressively rolling out, just under a larger screen.

The top G9s are run by Android 3.2 and powered by a 1.5GHz ARM Cortex dual-core A9.

Archos has gone against the grain of releasing separate Wi-Fi and 3G models by coupling the device with an add-on USB stick for 3G connectivity on top of the existing Wi-Fi.

Check over the page for the full tech specs on both models.
