Asus Could Build Its Own Version Of HoloLens

Asus and Microsoft have confirmed they are in talks about Asus potentially building its own HoloLens headset, CNET has reported. While the HoloLens has yet to be released, the report confirms Microsoft is looking to potential collaborations with other PC makers in the future development of the technology.

Asus chairman Jonney Shih and Microsoft executive vice president of Windows and devices Terry Myerson told CNET the two companies are talking about the possibility, with Asus to potentially become the first outside company to build a version of the device.

The development could see the creation of a new family of devices, potentially expanding the reach of Microsoft’s holographic system.

“Everything we’re doing in hardware, we do with the mind of how do we grow the Windows ecosystem,” Myerson told CNET. “That is why we’re investing to create a category.”

Microsoft HoloLens devices will begin shipping to developers in the US and Canada in the 2016 first quarter, carrying a price tag of US$3,000.

Myerson declined to tell CNET when Microsoft might start selling a cheaper version of the device for consumers.
