Aussies Quick To Dump Old Technology

Over 1300 people dumped an estimated 40 tonnes of unwanted IT equipment last weekend as part of Hewlett-Packard and Domayne’s IT recycling initiative.

Participants dumping old IT gear at select Domayne stores received a 25 percent discount on new purchases of HP imaging and printing hardware (single and multifunction printers) and a 10 per cent discount on HP/Compaq desktop and notebook PCs.

HP reported more than 870 printers, 1230 computer monitors, 1440 PCs and over 2600 other IT products and accessories were returned. The company said it will now facilitate the recycling of the equipment collected ensuring different materials – including plastics and metals – are recovered and then used in the production of a range of new products.

“Partnering with HP helped us to provide an effective and convenient recycling program for consumers. Offering such an important environmental initiative such as this benefits individuals and the environment, and Australian’s have shown they really understand that,” said Domayne’s Rodney Orrock.

Planet Ark Founder, Jon Dee, said “HP and Domayne made it much easier for the public to recycle their old computers and in doing so have saved 6172 IT products from going to landfill.  As a result they are measurably protecting the environment. ”
