Samsung has announced an LCT TV screen that bends.
The TFT LCD screen is double the size of its 5-inch LCD display, which was announced earlier in January 2005. The new TFT LCD features a 7-inch, 640 x 480 (VGA-standard), flexible display, using pliable transparent plastic substrate unlike the rigid glass substrates in today’s conventional LCD panels. The model shown is the largest, transmissive, TFT LCD (thin-film transistor, liquid crystal display), with high enough resolution to display digital television content.
Samsung’s TFT LCD also features a 40 percent Aperture Ratio, 100 nit brightness and color saturation of 60 per cent (of NTSC). The plastic substrate by virtue of its flexibility makes for greater freedom in commercial designs, and as such would find use in mobility applications such as notebook computers and cell phones, plus in new applications like wearable electronic display designs, etc. For its 7-inch, flexible TFT LCD, Samsung has developed a low-temperature processing technique, wherein the color filters, liquid crystals and amorphous thin-film transistors of this display are manufactured at temperatures much lower than the standard glass-based, amorphous silicon (a-Si) technology.
Thus Samsung’s proprietary LCD technology prevents changes in substrate thickness, as also distortion of images, thereby minimizing substrate deformation
