It seems that cooperation in the IT sector has taken on a new, if unintended form, as analysts claim that the success of Apple’s iPhone has helped its bitter rival BlackBerry more than double profits for its maker Research in Motion (RIM).

RIM’s net profit for this quarter stood at a whopping $US412.5 million, up from an equally respectable $US 187.4 million last year.
Despite or perhaps in spite of the popularity of Apple’s iPhone, RIM still tops the charts of smart phone sales, by shipping some 4.4 million BlackBerry handsets in the fourth quarter alone.
So after many years of playing in the big corporate sandpit, RIM recently began targeting the consumer market and in what could be a worrying sign for Apple, RIM said that more than half its new customers last quarter were consumers and small business owners.
And the trends are showing that although many people worldwide may be spending less money on cars or on their houses, the BlackBerry is the one essential they must have, making the smart phone near recession-proof in the eyes of some industry analysts.
