BlackBerry marker Research In Motion could be split into two divisions: handsets and messaging.
According to The Sunday Times, RIM may resort to listing its handset division as a separately listed company, or even sell it off.
Facebook and Amazon have been identified as potential buyers selling BlackBerry smartphones at a low-ball price.
With the handset division up for grabs, the Sunday Times claims Google or Apple could snap up BlackBerry’s Messaging (BBM) and email software.
There’s always the option of keeping the company united, albeit selling it off as a whole. The Sunday Times postulate Microsoft could snap RIM up, be we’d doubt they’d bother following their heavy investment in Nokia.
At one stage, RIM was the darling of the mobile industry. Its customers were loyal and habitual users, so much so they were coined “CrackBerries.” But they failed to innovate, with manufacturers like Samsung outpacing their hardware, while Apple’s iOS eclipsing their software. The company is banking on the new release of its BlackBerry 10 operating system for a comeback.
