Troubled retailer Game which recently announced it was going into voluntary administration after sales tanked will lay off 264 store and 17 head office workers – around half of its total workforce in Australia.
“After reviewing the financial performance and profitability of the individual stores, and with regard to current discussions with interested parties, it is not possible to continue to trade these stores”.
“This is a difficult time for employees and closing the stores was not a decision we made easily,” Game administrators, Kate Warwick , PricewaterhouseCoopers, said.
“However it is not financially viable to continue to operate at this level at this time.”
PwC has been in touch with the Federal Government Department that deals with General Employee Entitlements and Redundancy Scheme (GEERS) and will assist the employees with their applications, it said in a statement.
Game has 92 shop in total nationally.
For players who pre-ordered Diablo III from GAME Australia, did not receive their game, details on how to receive a credit have been posted on its forums.
