Can Android Save BlackBerry PlayBook?

Research In Motion is set to release a major update to its underselling PlayBook tablet next month that will bring Android apps onto the device.
The company’s most recent quarterly results have revealed profit dips of 59% and lacking PlayBook sales dwarfed by competitors like Apple, leading some analysts to predict it would follow HP’s TouchPad to the grave.

The PlayBook has suffered partly on the back of a lack of content, with a comparatively tiny application market when up against the likes of Android and Apple. An update next month is set to bridge the gap with a new video service and an application that will bring Android apps over to the BlackBerry QNX operating system.

The Android app player was originally revealed in May at RIM’s BlackBerry World event, running Android applications within a separate application window on the PlayBook.

Originally slated for a release earlier this winter, the firmware update is now predicted to hit PlayBooks next month at RIM’s US developer conference.
