Panasonic has unveiled the “world’s first Ultra HD Premium TV” at CES 2016, along with an Ultra HD Blu-ray ready player.Panasonic states the DX900 is the first LED LCD TV in the world that meets the standards of the UHD Alliance’s (UHDA) “Ultra HD Premium” specification, with picture performance criteria including resolution and high-dynamic range (HDR) performance, along with image precision and wide colour gamuts.
The DX900 has also received 4K Certification from THX.
“To make sure the DX900 is fully up to the challenge of meeting the exacting requirements of the UHDA’s highest performance grade, Panasonic’s engineers developed new hardware and software innovations for the DX900 that take LCD picture quality to places it’s never been before,” Panasonic states.
“In fact, the DX900 manages to combine for the first time the extreme brightness that’s an LCD’s strong point with the sort of contrast and black level response that people used to love about Panasonic’s plasma TVs.”
Pansonic states that, due in particular to new Honeycomb structure local dimming technology, the DX900 “proves definitively that an LCD can indeed deliver both the brightness highs and black level depths of a great HDR experience”.
The new LCD panel design divides the picture into hundreds of individually controlled lighting zones kept isolated from each other to ensure that there’s minimal light leakage between them.
“The result is a picture able to contain extremely bright peaks and deep blacks simultaneously without the light halo or ‘bloom’ effect around the bright objects that LCD technology usually produces,” Panasonic states.
Panasonic DX900 TVs, running Firefox OS, will be available in 65″ and 58″ models.
– DMP-UB900 Ultra HD Blu-ray ready player
Panasonic has also taken the wraps off its DMP-UB900 Ultra HD Blu-ray ready player, with Ultra HD Blu-ray delivering 4K-resolution pictures and supporting HDR.

“The UB900 features a new 4K High-Precision Chroma Processor equipped with imaging technologies such as chroma processing and high-gradation processing that have been fostered and refined by the Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory (PHL) Blu-ray R&D facility,” Panasonic states.
“By taking full advantage of the massive amount of Ultra HD Blu-ray data, the UB900 reproduces video images on a home TV that look exactly as their creators intended them to look.”
Supporting high-resolution audio formats such as DSD and ALAC, Panasonic states it plans for the UB900 to support 4K VOD services.
