Chinese Get Slice Of OZ 4G Market

Telecommunications equipment maker Huawei is looking to score bigtime following Optus’ proposed $230 million purchase of Vividwireless and its 98MHz of 2.3GHz spectrum. The Chinese maker, which has been Vividwireless’ technology partner, yesterday publicly congratulated both Optus and Vividwireless over the propose deal.

Optus has made it clear it aims to use at least part of the spectrum to build a 4G network using LTE-TDD (time division duplexing) technology capable of delivering up to 87Mbps – twice the top speed of Telstra’s FD-LTE 4G network.

Optus is also working on an 1800MHz FD-LTE 4G network, to be launched in Newcastle and the Hunter region of NSW in April. It says it intends to integrate the two networks.

Huawei yesterday was quick to point out that it holds a claimed 60 percent of the global market share for TD-LTE hardware, and launched the world’s first dual-mode LTE TDD/FDD dongle in December 2010.

Further, Huawei says it is the only vendor to have successfully tested LTE-TDD in Australia, having trialled the system in tests with Vividwireless and with Optus.
