MELBOURNE – If Labor wins the next federal election, it will drop the Coalition’s fibre-to-the-node rollout and replace it with something called fibre to the driveway, shadow comms minister Jason Clare, pictured, has said.The system is also known as fibre to the curb. And the
rollout could even begin before the next election, Clare told the CommsDay
Melbourne Congress.
“I think it is likely that sometime between now and the next election the
new Minister will announce that NBN will be rolling out fibre-to-the-curb –
using G.Fast”, he said.
(G.Fast is a digital subscriber line standard for local loops shorter than
500m, with performance targets between 150 Mbps and 1Gbps.)
Clare added: “Fibre to the node will be gone. It’s not a question of if
this will happen, it’s when it will happen and how it will be done.”
The Coalition Government’s NBN rollout plan currently allows for 20 per cent of
Australian homes and businesses getting fibre to the premises, 38 percent via
fibre to the node; and 34 percent getting access via their HFC pay-TV
connections.
