Nokia Lumia 800,  Nokia’s first on its newly enamoured Microsoft Windows platform, due March has now been confirmed as costing under the $700 mark outright.

This means Nokia priced 16GB Lumia as cheaper than the Apple equivalent iPhone 4S costing $799 outright, and probably its biggest rival along with new Androids like Samsung Nexus and HTC 4G Velocity.

Lumia 800 on Windows 7.5 with its  quirky grid tile interface will be sold at in Optus, Telstra, Vodafone and all “major retailers” from March, although no word yet what date or plans.

Other specs of note on Nokia’s Windows Phone 7.5 include: 8 MP camera with 28mm Carl Zeiss wide-angle lens and HD video, HTML5 compatible and Wi-Fi.

Nokia’s Lumia 800 comes in bog standard black as well as brighter hues like blue (Cyan), pink (Magenta) and white.

The 800 also has the standard Windows software including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and OneNote Bing, Internet Explorer 9.

But it appears Nokia has taken to flogging its Lumia 900 model at Microsoft retail stores in the US, to give Lumia that extra push… but is charging consumers $25 for the privilege, according to The Verge.

However, no price plans from telcos here have emerged, and is likely to go on a $59 or $79 cap from Telstra although plans may to get more competitive, good for you and I, if all three carriers are looking to gain share with the new Windows device.

And Nokia is confident Lumia will shine light on the (already swamped) smartphone market Down Under.

“Nokia Lumia will change the way people think about Nokia,” says Chris Carr, Nokia MD Australia.

“It signifies a new beginning for the company, bringing together the very best of Nokia’s handset design and services with the latest Windows Phone software.”

“Interest locally for Nokia Lumia, our first range of Nokia with Windows Phone devices, has been extremely positive, with a significant appetite from operators and retailers looking to offer consumers a real smartphone alternative.”

With uptake from all Australian operators and major retailers, the launch of the Nokia Lumia 800 signals our intent to regain leadership in smartphone design and usability, he added.
