Consumers Choose Samsung Galaxy S3 Over iPhone 5

Sales of Android OS devices, in particular Samsung’s Galaxy S III, have surged following the release of the new iPhone 5.New research reveals Apple’s relentless pursuit of Samsung in the courts could be having a detrimental effect on sales following both Apple’s $1.05 billion court victory and the release of the iPhone 5, which appears to be plagued with problems.

According to Localytics, who tracked sales of the Galaxy S III over the past three months, sales for Samsung’s flagship Android phone spiked during the week of the Apple verdict in a US Court.

Localytics’ results suggest that the patent defeat may not have branded Samsung as an “imitator” in the eyes of the public, but may have established a perception of the company as “comparable” to Apple.

Localytics measured weekly new device growth for the Galaxy S III from July 31 to October 1.

During that period, demand for the Samsung smartphone grew nine percent. For the week when Apple won their $1.05 billion patent verdict, new device growth for the S III shot up to 16 percent.

The week the iPhone 5 was announced; sales of Samsung’s flagship phone rose by 15 percent with some analysts suggesting that many consumers waited until the release of the iPhone 5 and then decided that the Samsung Galaxy S3 was a better offering.

Since the announcement of the iPhone 5, the S III has seen new device growth of 14 percent and nine percent.
