Despite 20% Fall In Compact Camera Sales Sony Launches New Models

Sony executives have finally admitted that point and shoot cameras are dying due to the popularity of cameras built into smartphones.Sony, who is struggling in the TV, tablet and PC market, has said that sales of their compact cameras are down 20% but despite this the Japanese Company is continuing to launch new models.

Overnight Sony has announced three new Cyber-shot cameras which they claim has improved video, more zoom, and megapixels galore.

The new Cyber-shot DSC-WX50 and a Sony WX-70 each have 16-megapixel CMOS sensors despite the Company admitting that this is a “bit over the top” and that “no one needs that many megapixels”.

The reason, says Sony management, is that consumers still gravitate to digital cameras with the highest amount of pixels. A bit like “mine is bigger than yours”.

The new cameras have 5x optical zoom starting at 25mm, shoot 1080i video at 60 frames per second, along with new filters and effects.

The difference between the two cameras is a 3″ inch touch display screen on the WX70, and a 2.7″ inch no touch display on the WX50.

At the top end of the point and shoot category Sony has introduced a super slim DSC-TX200V, an all-glass camera with a Carl Zeiss 5x optical zoom lens that is waterproof and dustproof up to 8 metres.

It has an 18-megapixel CMOS sensor (of course) and a 3.30-inch OLED touchscreen. It will also record 1080p video.

A new processor delivers superfast 0.1 second autofocus and lowered low-light autofocus to 0.2 seconds. It also has 5x (35mm) optical zoom, a range of f3.5-4.8, and a 1,229,760-dot TruBlack OLED screen.
