DHL Supply Chain aims to become the first outfit in the nation to offer free pick-up of computers, hard drives, keyboards, printers and televisions under the government-backed and industry-funded e-waste recycling scheme.
It will begin offering services in Canberra from May 15, the company has disclosed. The pick-up service will operate from Mugga Lane and Mitchell transfer stations in ACT seven days a week.
DHL’s operation contrasts with some other services planned under the scheme which would depend on consumers carting their unwanted waste to dumps which might be many kilometres away.
The National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme, funded by a charge on equipment purchases, aims to boost the recycling rate for TVs and computers from 17 per cent in 2010 to 80 per cent by 2021.
Under the Act, all importers of TVs and PC hardware must join an approved recycling program. Latest to sign up include Brother, Dell, Dicker Data, EMC, Epson, Medion, NEC, Pioneer, Targus and Uniden.
