Universal Pictures and ReelTime have launched the first major movie download-to-own (DTO) service in the Australian market.
The movie studio is hoping the DTO service will offer a viable alternative to the piracy problem facing the industry, according to ReelTime’s managing director, John Karantzis.
“We feel this service provides a robust anti-piracy alternative, as well as providing professionally encoded content for portable devices, for enjoyment any time, any place,” Karantzis says.
Users of the service can download a selection of Universal’s movies and content for permanent ownership and full permission.
You log onto the ReelTime Web site at www.reeltime.tv. After finding the content you want to download and paying the fee, you will be given access two Windows Media files, downloadable to PC or laptop and a portable device.
There is also a third digital file that allows you to securely and legitimately burn the movie to DVD with full DVD functionality.
Currently, 35 Universal titles are on offer, including the recent Miami Vice movie.
Movie pricing will range from $14.98 through to $33.99 for some new releases.
