Driverless Cars Cruise Melbourne

Driverless cars took to Melbourne’s Albert Park Road at the weekend as part of a demonstration organised by the 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems, which opened in Melbourne.

As predicted (CDN, Friday), the Albert Park event included an appearance by what was billed as Australia’s first locally designed self-driving car system – actually the body of a Tesla electric car, with a driverless system designed by the Down Under arm of Bosch.

It also featured a driverless shuttle bus and a Siemens car that uses Wi-Fi to share information with other cars to help prevent crashes.

Monali Shah, director of intelligent transport at Here, a UK based designer of services for autonomous cars, said Australians didn’t need to wait for automated vehicles to start benefiting from the available technology.

She noted that the Tasmanian Government is using Here GPS data to track traffic and measure the performance of new road projects.
