DVD Review: World Trade Center

The new Oliver Stone epic set in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of 9/11 is now available in an impressive two-disc commemorative edition.

Oliver Stone plays it safe all the way with this true account of two Port Authority officers who were rescued from the wreckage of the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. And it’s not surprising, given the events of that fateful day are still very sensitive to many Americans.

Leaving all of his fancy cinematic tricks (as well as his more confrontational tendencies) behind, Stone’s film is a two-hour celebration of heroism that splits its time between disaster movie and family melodrama. The cast put in excellent performances and the recreation of the destruction of the towers (and the subsequent devastation) is brilliantly realised, but the film is far more concerned with hitting all the right emotional buttons to measure up to Paul Greengrass’ superb United 93.

Regardless, this is an exceptional DVD package.

The transfer is virtually flawless, with excellent detail and black levels. Generous extras include commentaries by the director and the people the film is based on and deleted/ extended scenes.

The cast is also exceptional, featuring Oscar-winner Nicholas Cage and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
