Extended Warranty Planned For Sony PS3

Owners of Sony PS3 consoles in Australia may soon be able to buy an extended two year Playstation warranty from Sony Computer Entertainment after the launch of an extended warranty program in the USA.

The product, which is tipped to be launched in Australia soon, may come in handy for a lot of owners who have been having quality problems with their consoles.

Last year, SmartHouse received over 30 emails from consumers who were being asked to spend over $200 to fix faulty Sony Playstation Consoles – some were less than two years old.

Under the new program, PS3 and PSP owners in the United States can purchase an extended-service plan of one or two years that begins at the end of the original one-year manufacturer’s limited warranty.

PSP owners can also choose the accidental damage plan, which adds coverage for cracked-screen damage in the event of an unexpected drop, Sony said.

The pricing includes all shipping charges and repairs, which are performed by PlayStation-trained service technicians using official parts at SCEA-authorised repair facilities, Sony said.

The PlayStation Protection Plan is available from the beginning of this month at the following US prices:

PS3 – one-year extension ($49.99) or two-year extension ($59.99)
PSP – one-year extension ($29.99) or two-year extension ($39.99)
PSP with accidental damage – one-year extension ($39.99) or two-year extension ($49.99)

The PlayStation Protection Plan is available to PS3 or PSP owners (both the PSP-3000 and PSPgo systems) who are still within their one-year limited manufacturer’s warranty, as well as new purchasers.

The PSP accidental damage plan must be purchased within the first 30 days of owning a PSP system, and the plan is effective from the purchase date.
