Facebook Messenger is separating from Facebook to a certain degree, with Facebook announcing a Facebook account will no longer be needed to sign up for Messenger in select countries.The option will be provided to sign up for Messenger separately from Facebook via the Messenger welcome screen, with users able to do so with their name, phone number and a photo, with the service rolling out in Canada, the United States, Peru and Venezuela.
For those who don’t have a Facebook account, or for those considering closing an account but who wish to stay in contact with Facebook friends, it could well prove an attractive option, potentially appealing to a wider user audience.
As Facebook software engineer Louis Boval noted in announcing the move, with the update “more people can enjoy all the features” available on Messenger.
In making the announcement, however, Boval also noted there are still benefits to holding accounts with both platforms.
“For those who have Facebook accounts, there are many benefits to using your Facebook credentials when signing up for Messenger,” Boval commented.
“People can easily message with their Facebook friends and contacts, access their Facebook messages and take advantage of multi-device messaging across mobile devices, the web and tablets.”
