Fixed Lines Improve Too Late For Mobile Takeover

Fixed-line telecom service performance is improving and less people are complaining in the 2009-10 period but it seems a little too late for a struggling market, according to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).”While the overall results for 2009-10 are positive, ACMA is still looking for performance improvements on some consumer safeguards, particularly in rural and remote areas,” said ACMA Chairman, Chris Chapman.

Complaints about landline and internet services have decreased, while mobile complaints are on the rise. While the ACMA peg this consumer attitude shift on improving landline performance, studies point toward a shift in buying patterns.

A study by the Social Research Centre last year stated that, “a growing proportion of Australians live in households that do not have a landline telephone and rely solely on a mobile phone for their telecommunications.”

Previous surveys from the ACMA have indicated that only two-thirds of young people connect to a landline when they move into their own homes.

“While the overall results for 2009-10 are positive, ACMA is still looking for performance improvements on some consumer safeguards, particularly in rural and remote areas,” said ACMA Chairman, Chris Chapman.

Telstra experienced a fall in profits and a forced cut of profit forecasts earlier this year in the wake of landline customer drops.
