Ford’s AppLink 3.0 Will Support Smartphone Navigation Apps

Ford has announced its next version of AppLink, AppLink 3.0, will provide for greater smart device interaction, allowing for the projection of third-party moving graphics – such as maps from smartphones – onto in-vehicle touchscreens. The announcement comes on the back of Ford unveiling Sync 3, its new in-dash communications and entertainment system, last month.

While Sync 3 is slated for release later this year, Ford has advised it will begin rolling out AppLink 3.0 next year.

Ford states the next version of AppLink is part of its implementation of open-source SmartDeviceLink technology, making it “easier for developers to create smartphone apps that are compatible with communications and entertainment systems from all automakers and suppliers”.

“With each new version of AppLink, we’re improving the in-car experience with better integration of smartphone apps and easier ways for customers to access and control the content they love,” commented Joe Beiser, Ford director, Connected Services for Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa.

“The next version, AppLink 3.0, leverages open-source SmartDeviceLink functionality to give developers a method to project graphics – such as maps – onto our vehicle touchscreens.”

Ford states as part of the SmartDeviceLink initiative it is working with Alibaba to extend the group’s map, navigation and music services to vehicles, which has led to the integration of SmartDeviceLink into Alibaba’s app for navigation services, AutoNavi.
