Forget Facebook, You Got Pinterest?

Forget Facebook walls, its all about pinboards. The latest social network to hit the scene Pinterest already has over 12 million users in the US and 200,000 users in Britain since it went live in 2010.
Pinterest is an online pinboard. Organize and share things you love,” it says on its homepage.

The network appears to be a chick-centric affair with interests (or ‘pins’) like recipes, thoughts, pictures and clothes all current pinterests on the homepage.

“Lean Lettuce wrap”, some killer “Hello Kitty” black heels and “If I had a British accent I’d never shut up” among the pinterests appearing currently on the homepage.

But in fact, there are a bundle of pinterests categories (32 in total) that would appeal to men also including technology, architecture, cars, fitness, gardening and so on.

Pinterest is the hottest word in social networking right now as the gloss around Facebook fades (hey, anything your mother/grandmother are also on can’t be that cool).

And according to Social Media News, over 160,000 Aussies visited the site in February 57% female, 43% male and spent over 14 minutes browsing its pages.

You sign up via email and then are put on a waiting list, followed by an invitation, although worry not the Silicon Valley based Pinterest is not a closed club.

Users can ‘Repin’, ‘Like’ a la Facebook or ‘Comment’ on the pins giving the new social network a real community feel, without having to befriend the person.

Pinterest was created by Ben Silbermann, of West Des Moines, Iowa in 2009.

Time Magazine voted it among its  “50 Best Websites of 2011” and there’s already iPhone app and several apps on Android for mobile users.
