App developer Halfbrick Studios is moving to Sydney to develop the new version of its popular Fruit Ninja mobile game thanks to an enticing bit of funding from the NSW Government.
The NSW Government is spreading $3million to digital content creators over two years through its Interactive Media Fund, previously the Digital Media Initiative, to entice growth in the local interactive content market.
Halfbrick Studios is heading up one of seven Government-funded projects, being the latest version of the highly popular (and profitable) mobile apps, Fruit Ninja.
“The global digital games market is expected to more than double to $53 billion by 2016 and mobile gaming to triple to $17.5 billion,” said Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner in a statement.
While the scheme does look to support ‘commercially-oriented projects’, many of the supported projects are in the education sphere, including a paramedic simulation game by the Ambulance Research Institute.
The fund is promoting the innovative new breed of developers looking to take interactive content to emerging platforms and new devices, with the resources to attend global digital media and gaming community events while developing.
