Five inch smartphones featuring a Full HD resolution 1920-by-1080 screen are to be launched by Samsung, LG, Huawei and ZTE in the first half of 2013.
In international markets, HTC has released its 5 inch, Full HD Butterfly, while Sharp competes with its Aquos SH930W, another 5 inch Full HD smartphone.
Higher resolution 5 inch touchscreens pack individual pixels closer together, ultimately improving how receptive the smartphone is to touch gestures and playing back multimedia at the highest possible resolution. But unlike a television, it does this in the palm of your hand.
At 5 inches, these smartphones will have a pixel density in the area of 440 pixels-per-inch (ppi). In comparison, Apple’s 4 inch iPhone 5 has 326ppi.
While Samsung and LG will use their own screen technologies, Sony will purchase supplies from JDI; a supplier which it has a stake in. Smartphone-makers based in Taiwan or China will turn to either Samsung, LG or JDI according to DigiTime’s undisclosed source.
