Funky Toshiba Netbook Combines Style And Performance

The Toshiba NB200 is a compact Netbook which uses an Intel Atom N280 processor, 1GB of RAM and a full sized keyboard. It has a solid build quality and looks rather attractive making it a good choice for fashionistas that want something that will work well without skimping on quality.

Like most Netbooks, the NB200 is available in various configurations.  The base model has a 120GB hard drive with the next model up increasing that to 160GB for an extra $50.  These two models are only available in the black colour. The next tier includes Bluetooth, a longer life battery and comes in a range of three colours costing a further $50 once again.

The NB200 has a 10.1inch screen with a native resolution of 1024×600.  If you want to save money, there is also an 8.9 inch option too. All variations come with a 1.3 Megapixel webcam, three USB ports, an SD/MMC card reader and a VGA port.
We tested the unit running various office productivity packages and web browsers to see how it faired with regular day to day tasks.

While it feels a little sluggish at times, it worked well for the most part.  It would probably fair better if extra RAM was installed though.  While it only has basic integrated graphics capabilities, it is still able to play video full screen, even HD video, which we were quite impressed with. Keep in mind though that video will drain the battery faster.

We performed a battery test to check if the reported 3.5 hours on the standard battery was accurate.  Our battery run down test involves playing full most video which resulted in a time of 2hours 20 minutes.  Since video is more taxing on the Netbook than regular tasks, this suggests the 3.5hour rating is accurate. It is more than enough time to watch a movie on the train as well.  The more expensive configuration has a battery rated at 9 hours so you may want to upgrade if battery life is important to you.

We particularly liked the design which has a solid hinge and thick screen casing allowing the little PC to be quite rugged.  The keyboard stretches across the whole base of the unit and its keys aren’t too small making it easy to type on. The outer case has a gloss finish while the interior and keyboard is a matte black.

Even though the screen cannot go above 1024×600, if you are using an external monitor you can push it to any resolution required, even 1920×1080.  We were able to output to a 1680×1050 monitor and a 1080p television without any problems.

The NB200 is a funky little Netbook with good performance and a whole lot of style.  For an extra $100 you can get a different range of colours, a larger hard drive, Bluetooth and a longer lasting battery.  Also, Toshiba is offering a $100 cashback on all NB200 Netbooks so getting the highest tier is still quite affordable.

The base model NB200 retails for $649. The second teir is $699 and the final model is $749.  All models have a $100 cashback.
