I got it! Aussie first in the world to get S5It’s probably the most hotly anticipated phone this year and has just gone on sale today, with Australia being among the first countries to sell the new Samsung Android.
The first Galaxy S5 device sold in the world was at Samsung’s store in Sydney this morning to a Vodafone customer, Brittany Nelson.
A Vodafone spokesperson confirmed “strong interest in the GS5 from the moment we started with online preregistration to presales a couple of weeks ago.”
The 5.1″ Full HD SUPER AMOLED Galaxy S5 is dustproof and waterproof, 16MP camera, tap ‘n pay mobile payments, powered by a potent 2.5GHz quad-core processor.
Vodafone opened up stores at 6am this morning in anticipation of the S5 sale, which costs $929 unlocked, although Telstra appears to be one of the only telco’s selling it outright.
A Telstra spokesperson told CN, ” it will certainly be one of the best sellers this year, we had one of our strongest pre-sales on record.
“Also with the companion devices [Gear 2, Neo and Fit] one in five Australians surveyed plan to buy a wearable device this year. “
Telstra went a step further for the S5 launch and also had a 6am start today, holding a celeb packed ‘workout’ putting the S5 and Samsung’s new fitness bands Gear 2 Neo and Fit to the test in an obstacle course.
Athletes including ex-NRL champion, Wendell Sailor, snowboarder Alex “Chumpy Pullin, who is also a Samsung ambassador, were decked in their workout Gear to promote the launch.
The heavily Twitter-ized event (#TelstraG5Fit) was held at The Rocks in Sydney from 6am-10am.
Telstra will be staging similar events across the country today, as it pushes wearable tech, said to be the next big thing in mobiles.
The new Galaxy can be bought at JB Hi -Fi on Telstra plan also, who told Channel News the new Samsung will be one of its “headline acts” this year.
Dick Smith and Harvey Norman are selling it outright, although Dick is undercutting its rival selling it at $896, $30 cheaper than $929 (same price as Telstra) charged by Harvey’s.
