It’s an avalanche: the games giant has dropped its wildly popular Guitar Hero.

Activision Blizzard, the top gamer in Europe and North America, are also dropping the sequel to True Crime: Hong Kong, currently in development by United Front Games.
However, as the old favourites die away, new releases including Call of Duty: Black Ops and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm rise from the ashes, helping net revenues for 2010 to increase to $4.45 billion compared with $4.28 bn for the previous year.
“Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011,” the gamer said in a statement on Friday.
Call of Duty: Black Ops First Strike, the first add-on pack set a new Xbox LIVE records with more than 1.4 million downloads in the first 24 hours – an increase of more than 25% over last year’s Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package.
They are also in the process of creating a new online community forum dedicated to Call of Duty called Beachhead, that will offer fanatics a new home with paid content and services.
First launched in 2005, Guitar Hero sold over $2 billion of its games until its demise this year.
“These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world’s best interactive entertainment,” Activision Blizzard said.
