Goodbye Morpheus, Hello PlayStation VR

Sony has landed on a name for its virtual reality gaming headset, officially titling it PlayStation VR.While a specific release date hasn’t been locked in (Sony has previously stated it is targeting the first half of 2016), Sony states it will continue development of the PS VR, with the official naming bringing a sense of fresh momentum to its VR venture.

There’s momentum building behind VR in general, with some heavy hitting tech players making initial forays into the market amid a number of releases this year, with Sony looking to be the first gaming giant to pair a console with a VR headset.

Sony states PS VR will take the PS4 “to the next level of immersion”.

“The name PlayStation VR not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation, that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game, but it also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this amazing experience,” Masayasu Ito, EVP, division president of PS product business, and VP, software design division, commented.

“We will continue to refine the hardware from various aspects, while working alongside third party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, in order to bring content that deliver exciting experiences only made possible with VR.”

Sony states third party software developers and publishers, along with SCE Worldwide Studios have been developing a broad range of software titles, with several to be showcased globally at events, starting with the Tokyo Game Show 2015, from September 17.
