Google Chrome OS Needs Tablet To Survive Against Apple

The Google Chrome OS could be responsible for netbooks losing out to tablets in the portable device market, according to Ovum research.
That is if the platform is successful. The research shows that Google will have to tailor its product to tablet devices in order to garner market share against Apple’s iOS.

“While the release of a pilot Chrome OS device is a significant milestone, Google will need to maintain development progress on its platform and hardware OEMs will need to follow with tablet form factor devices if they expect to significantly impact market share,” said Senior Consultant at Ovum, Craig Skinner.

The Chrome OS and Android OS similarly focus on eliminating non-essential functions that slow down devices in favour of a focus on accessing information and services; a level of functionality suited more toward tablets and smartphones than desktop computers and laptops.

Google will be competing directly with Apple if its OS ventures into the tablet market, as the iPad with iOS software maintains market share. Google’s Chrome OS is currently in a beta/testing form in a laptop called the Cr-48 and will not be released publicly until the second half of 2011. Meanwhile, the second version of the iPad will be released earlier next year.

Ovum research suggests that the Chrome OS will need to be adopted by tablet devices when it is released if it is to be successful.
